Description:
Scheuerle commented, "Yellow Calf - Assiniboine - Note the facial decoration - chalked hair - an old fine Assiniboine wararior of the Fox clan. Painted at Fort Belknap, Mont. Lodge Pole Camp, 1914. He further noted, "Facial Decorations - For different occasions make interesting reading - Religious ceremony - War - Parades - Mourning - Burial - Different dances - Scouting - camouflage. The use of paint on the face, in color + design is a reference to individual and clan belief - the practice was observed and widespread with both sexes - paint also was used for protection against wind and sun. I like to let them do their own decoration - such as painting up - on the manner of dressing - you get many surprises - here's a fine example of a makeup."
