On the back Scheuerle noted, "Chase Almond - Ogalala [sic] Sioux - (Wife of Roan Horse). Painted at Pine Ridge Agy. SD. 1909. Note the heavy shell ear rings. They have torn big slits in her ears - her garment ornamented with sea shells - like used by our N.W. tribes of the Columbia river and Puget Sound. A very sweet old lady, who always talked a lot to me, I didn't savvy [comprehend], sorry to say."
