On the back of this painting Scheuerle wrote, "Cold Hand - Hunkpapa Sioux of Sitting Bull's Band lives on mouth of Porcupine Creek where we visited him - about 10 miles north of Fort Yates, Standing Rock Res. N Dak. Cold Hand is a fine old type, dignified Indian Judge - and a great talker; heard him in Council talking a long time...Cold Hand is of Sitting Bull's immediate Band. He is 74 years old."
