Kayla Rowland is my first born niece. She graduated in 2006, already enlisted and ready to go to boot camp. Kayla completed her 13 week basic training at Parris Island, SC. She graduated in the top 10% of her class and was in the top 5 out of both female platoons. She is in Motor Transport and drives a 7 ton truck in a convoy, bringing supplies to her fellow Marines. She is with one of 3 Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, (MEF FWD) which is a combined arms force consisting of ground, air and logistics forces. With the capability of projecting offensive combat power ashore while sustaining itself in combat without external assistance for a period of 60 days. With strength in excess of 47,000 Marines and Sailors, II MEF is representative of the largest and most powerful Marine Air-Ground Task Force. Kayla is assigned to a Motor Transport Unit, traveling in convoys across the hot desert, susceptible to attack by improvised exploding devices, rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire. I'm incredibly proud of her and what she has accomplished. Not to mention, she will be turning 19 in Iraq, at the end of August. She began her tour early July and is expected to be there for a year. I believe that my niece Kayla Rowland is a hero!
