Description:
In New York City Hopkins met Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell, Willem de Kooning and other abstract expressionists. His experimentation with collage techniques and style as an abstract expressionist, won him national acclaim.
The area of interest lies in a lower central band across the canvas from which emerges a red E shaped form from out of blackness. There are accents of blue and gold ochre and white dispersed throughout the black paint with the red form and it sets a stage for a strange interplay of exacting form against gestural brushstroke. The whole painting is oddly, enigmatically dramatic and carefully staged.
