Description:
An artistic relative of the Abstract Expressionists, Hyde Solomon was long active in the New York art scene, first as a student at the Art Students League and then with continuous exhibitions in galleries from 1940 into the 1960s. Solomon painted abstract works as well as strong portraiture.

This piece is painted in dominant deep blues and greens with purple and orange accents resulting in a heavily impastoed surface. The top of the painting contains some gestural brushstrokes that appear calligraphic in nature while the rest of the surface is covered in close passages of grouped brushstrokes making small transitions from one plane of color to the next.
