Description:
Robert Goodnough was an American abstract espressionist painter. A veteran of World War II, Goodnough was one of the last of the original generation of the New York School, even though he began exhibiting his work in galleries in New York City in the early 1950s.
This is a good example of stripe and color field painting. Vertical black stripes with vertical colored stripes ranging from deep blue to shades of green, red, and grey. This is also an example of the "push-pull" theory developed by Haus Hoffman in 1943 where in chosen colors move receding areas to the surface while moving protruding areas back.
