Description:
De Niro's final exhibition at the Egan Gallery (February 24 - March 19, 1955) featured a peculiar composition with two adjacent blank-faced, graphically elementary figures in reddish jackets, one standing and the other seated, with flanking zones of sky blue as daringly minimal suggestions of the outdoors.

This painting refers knowingly to a famous work by the French Realist Gustave Courbet painted exactly one hundred years earlier to show the artist greeted by his foremost patron, a reference that might be understood by Rivers or Schapiro, both familiar wiht Courbet's art. It is difficulat not to consider the painting as an oblique double portrait of De Niro with George Poindexter, who acquired if for his collection.
