On the back of this painting Scheuerle wrote, "White Weasel - Atsina - Arapaho old Gros Ventre warrior...Gros Ventre are very poor, and proud people - self supporting for a long time - have little more than rags to dress in and no more robes or leather for the making clothes - Painted at Lodge Pole Sub Agency, Fort Belknap Red. Mont. 1914" Scheuerle descrives a humorous encounter with his wife and White Weasel, "Indians are after human hair still - One day White Weasel collected the combings of my wife's blond hair, rolling up the strands and putting them away carefully, to our great amusement - J. Scheuerle."
