Scheuerle wrote, "RED CLOUD...Picture painted in his summer tipi outside his house at Pine Ridge S. dak July 1909. He was about 90 years old - sick & nearly blind. He died following Nov. (1909) This is the last picture he sat for. I got 2 poses of him - front & side views - Sharp & Burbank / painted him. I got a big thrill meeting him, He first real big Indian I met. Ben American Horse, his nephew introduced me to Red Cloud straightened up & offered us 'How' and his hand - He took a cigar I offered took one puff out of courtesy and threw the rest out. I asked him about his blindness, he's been nearly blind for many years, he said he could see me like shadow. When I left he gave me his moccasins - his little grandchild gave me her skin beaded pocket book. I stayed a few days around / his camp & also painted his son Jack Red Cloud and his daughter Mrs. Kills & / He was one of the greatest Indians of all times..."
