Description:
Scheuerle wrote, "Black Heart was very active in the many battles against the military and other Indian tribes - he fought in Fetterman's defeat - Wagon Box fight and little Big Horn - of the Red Cloud Band, [painted] in a war bonnet of 'young eagle' feathers a war shirt with porcupine strips - The ornament is a 'heart shield' usually worn under the leather shirt, for good medicine and protection. Painted in the shadow of a mission church overlooking an Indian cemetery. Pine Ridge S.D. July. 1909"
