Note by the artist on the back reads, "John is a deaf mute - uses hand talk - telling you his name - said to be son of Sitting Bull...now engaged in the 'Show' business with the Ringling Circus Wild West, painted in Madison Square Garden N.Y. April 10 - 1936. I've painted John 27 years ago at White Clay Camp S. Dak. where he was about 40 years old then a very handsome Indian.
