Description:
Joseph Gump worked on the ranch at St. Peter's Mission where Wells lived. Although girls residing in the mission were not allowed to associate with men working there, love developed between Mary Wells and Joseph Gump. Joseph asked the Mother Superior for permission to marry Mary Wells. Permission was granted, and they wed at St. Peter's Mission in 1895. They moved to Marysville, where they raised a son and a daughter.
