Times of Trouble, Times of Change: Montana and the Great War
Title:
HELMET
Date:
ca. 1917
Source:
Bequest of Sally K. Stivers
Object ID:
1978.47.02
Description:
No man's land - which separated opposing armies - was marred by artillery shell holes, barbed wire, mines, and the carnage of war. Soldiers charged across these areas to attack enemy trenches and engage in hand-to-hand combat.

"We are all packed up to shove off for somewhere. The hope is that we are going to the front and go over the top in the morning. If we do and I don't come back, goodbye my dear little girl and family." -Thomas Walter Grimes, journal entry, September 1, 1918
