In June 1917, Virginia Flanagan of Great Falls was one of three Montana women selected during the first Red Cross call for nurses. In all, 170 Montana nurses answered the call to service during the war.
5,000 Montanans died of the Spanish Influenza. Montana was the fourth hardest-hit state in the nation.
Almost 40,000 Montanans (or about 1 in 12) suffered from the flu in the winter of 1918-19. Communities closed schools, saloons, and churces to curb the spread of the disease.
Flanagan served through the American Red Cross Nursing Service, including at the ARC Military Hospital No. 1 near Paris, which was often under threat of bombing.
