Description:
Montanans served with honor in the "War to End All Wars" - from the skies over Europe to the forests of France, from military hospitals to supply ships, and from the telephone exchanges to the trenches.

In proportion to the state's population, the number of Montanans who served during the First World War was roughly 25% higher than most states. Montanans also volunteered at twice the national average.

American Indians fought for the right to serve in the military. Crow Chief Plenty Coups urged Crow men to enlist: "You are Americans - The first Americans! Be proud of that."

Stephen Reardon was an electrician working for the Butte and Superior Mining Company when he was drafted. He fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and later worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company.
