Description:
Herman Cherry, an abstract painter was a contemporary and friend of the vanguard Abstract Expressionist artist. He was known for his accomplished interplay of color and shape in his canvases.
This is a sparse painting that relies on the unsullied expansiveness of white primed, unpainted canvas to contrast a concentrated area of paint. This painting is characterized by brushy splotches of thin stains and washes with areas of light impasto that pile together in a mass of color that hangs from the topmost edge of the canvas. There are areas that lie in a warm range of purple tinged reds and vibrant oranges, golden yellows and chrome lemons along with half a dozen greens that cover the spectrum from mint to drab olive. Their is liberal use of a white that is brighter and cleaner than the primed canvas and acts as a form of editing, covering over layers of underpaint, hanging amidst the areas of color like a cloud. The passages of color themselves are all jumbled, sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertically oriented, but all strung together by the long horizontal grey bar that stretches across the top edge of the canvas and lends itself to the title.
