Description:
Like Woelffer, born in Chicago, Robert Natkin carved out an original and distinctive style. Natkin was labeled "a pacified Expressionist," exploring "niceties" of color and light on large, thinly painted canvases.
In Apollo, one of his favorite and often repeated themes, there is horizontal alternation between cool-colored bands and warm-colored bands - even as a similar color reverberation is created in a more atmospheric way between the small globes in the center area. This color emphasis reinforces the flatness of the picture and sets up an almost hallucinatory push-pull rhythm within Natkin's extremely shallow picture space.
