Title:
THE THERMAE (FORIO D' ISCHIA, NAPALI)
Artist:
Woelffer, Emerson
Medium:
Oil on canvas
Date:
1959
Object ID:
1984.127.01
Description:
An American painter known for his Abstract Expressionist compositions of jagged forms. Woelffer's attitude towards painting was based in the Surrealist automatic drawing and the subconscious. "I always work first and think later,' he once explained.

In this piece, a white and red tic-tac-toe form scratched in the center and three loosely brushed white areas are marked onto the large black field. The complementary red and green colors at either end create something of a vertical pull along the surface of the black field, which vaguely recalls a building facade. The picture as a whole seems to convey geographical or architectural atmosphere and space.
