Description:
The Montana Council of Defense promoted the war effort: they offered assistance to farmers, promoted war gardens, encouraged enlistment, and pushed for Red Cross and Liberty Bond drives. The Councils also suppressed dissenting opinions, controlled public gatherings, and fueled suspicions between neighbors.

Several patriotic and loyalty organizations emerged during the war, claiming to keep the state from "going over body and soul to the Kaiser."
