Paxson began on the murals for the state capitol in 1911. He, Ralph DeCamp and Charles Russell had been selected to do the work for the just completed wings of the capitol building. Edgar was commissioned to paint two, four-by-tweleve-foot panels and four, four-by-four-foot panels depiting historic Montana scenes of his choice to be placed in the foyer of the chamber of the House of Representatives. When he was given the go ahead by the Board of Examiners, he plunged into an exhausting full year of painting, all done in his studio.
