Upon his return, Paxson was commissioned by Butte citizens to design an ornate archway and sculpt a statue of Peace to stand on top it, welcoming home the volunteers in October 1899.
"Spent a short time in town tonight. The arch is a fine sight lit up with its many electric lights and Chinese lantern hung along the streets. Reminded me of a night in Japan..." July 20, 1901
Aboard the ship home Paxson suffered injuries when a wave struck him and threw him against a spar. This particular drawing depicts some of his ship-board companions on the ship home from the Phillipines.
