Description:
Paxson's daughter described an early memory of her father in his studio at work:
"Indians came often to visit or sit silently watching the artist work. at about the age of five or six I remember being called in and of having to sit in the lap of, perhaps, some famous Indian Chief. He was friendly with the Indians and become interested in painting pictures of them to help preserve their history and customs for the future. They were always welcome in his studio"

Near the end of his career, Paxson moved from painting signs and theater backdrops to focusing on Indian portraits. Many depict great historic figures, such as Chief Joseph (Nez Perce), Black Hawk (Sauk), and Two Moons (Cheyenne).
